Airtel Nigeria Takes the Lead with 5G Network Service Launch
Airtel Nigeria has made a significant leap forward by kick-starting its Fifth-Generation (5G) network service in Abuja, Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers states. This milestone comes six months after Airtel Nigeria secured the 3.5 gigahertz spectrum to introduce a 5G network in the country. The company has promised to expand the service to other states in the federation, aiming to transform the telecommunications landscape.
Airtel Nigeria Joins the Ranks of 5G Providers in Nigeria
Airtel Nigeria joins the ranks of MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications Ltd as one of the telecommunications operators that have successfully rolled out 5G services in the country. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), 5G license holders are required to deploy their services in at least 10 states within the first year of obtaining their licenses. This move highlights the industry’s commitment to advancing communication technology in Nigeria.

During the unveiling event in Lagos, Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Carl Cruz, emphasized that 5G technology represents a significant advancement beyond its predecessor, 4G. Cruz acknowledged the remarkable capabilities of 4G but stressed that 5G opens up a new vista of possibilities. He highlighted the potential for increased collaboration among stakeholders in the telecoms industry to explore Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, and Smart Cities, among other innovations.

Cruz expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for enabling Nigeria to become one of the first 60 countries worldwide to launch 5G. He reiterated Airtel Nigeria’s dedication to making 5G accessible and widespread throughout the country. With the allocated frequency spectrum band for 5G, consumers can expect an immersive and rewarding experience. Cruz emphasized that the possibilities with 5G are only limited by the boundaries of imagination.

Highlighting the transformative nature of 5G, Cruz emphasized that it revolutionizes various sectors. For instance, while 4G enables smooth video playback and video calls, 5G opens the door to end-to-end video creation supported by Artificial Intelligence directly on users’ browsers. Additionally, 5G enhances cloud computing, telemedicine, self-driving cars, cloud gaming, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR & VR), Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart homes. These advancements pave the way for a future of boundless opportunities.
Airtel’s Strategy for Widespread 5G Adoption
Airtel’s Chief Commercial Officer, Femi Oshinlaja, provided insight into the company’s plan to ensure broader access to 5G technology. Airtel Nigeria is offering routers at an affordable price of N30,000 and has partnered with Samsung to provide the Galaxy A14 model at a competitive rate. Oshinlaja assured users that although 5G technology consumes more data due to its increased speed and latency, the rates and prices of data will remain the same. Airtel has established partnerships with Samsung, Huawei, and ZTE to deliver a comprehensive 5G experience.
