A chieftain of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Saka Ibraheem Ominiwe, has cautioned the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) against proceeding with a nation-wide strike to protest petroleum subsidy removal. He considers the unions’ plans ill-timed and political.
In a statement to newsmen in Ibadan, the party chieftain emphasized the need for sober reflection in light of the current political situation in Nigeria and the world. He acknowledged the workers’ right to strike but highlighted that it should be a last resort after exhausting other options.
Ominiwe pointed out that the present administration is only two months old and requires support from all Nigerians to address the country’s myriad of problems. He urged the organized labor unions to set aside their strike plans for now and instead offer pragmatic steps and suggestions to move the country forward, particularly in light of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to lead the country towards economic recovery and growth.
He concluded by stating that a strike at this juncture would exacerbate the challenges faced by Nigerians and serve no meaningful purpose, advocating for dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation.
