Several Nigerian governors who are ending their tenures have expressed their willingness to play active advisory roles in their state’s development. This has been widely welcomed by many who believe that the vast experience and knowledge of these former governors could be valuable to the development of their respective states.
Among these governors is Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State, who will be leaving office on May 29, 2023. Wike has declared that he will not take up any ministerial appointments after leaving office but instead, will offer advice on good governance to political office holders and others. Similarly, Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State has stated his readiness to provide possible solutions to his successor if needed, although he does not wish to feature as a front runner of the administration.
Udom Emmanuel, the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, has expressed his desire to return to the banking industry after his tenure. Despite rumors that he would use executive powers to secure a senatorial seat, he has opted to toe the path of peace and allow the zoning arrangement to subsist over his personal interest.
The decision of these former governors to offer advisory services for their state’s development is commendable. Their accumulated knowledge and experience will undoubtedly prove valuable in ensuring the continued growth and progress of their states. This gesture also sets an excellent precedent for other outgoing governors to emulate.
It is hoped that the incoming administrations will take advantage of this offer and consult these experienced governors on how best to continue the development of their respective states. This way, Nigeria can continue on the path of progress and sustainable development.
