Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has revealed that the E-mobility and Gas Mobility Programme of the state will commence in the first week of August. The governor emphasized that his administration would capitalize on the recently signed electricity bill to establish a power supply company, enabling the generation and distribution of electricity in the Gateway State. Governor Abiodun made these remarks during a courtesy call by participants of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in his office.
In his second term, Governor Abiodun has set his sights on providing essential public utilities such as water and electricity supply. The E-mobility and Gas Mobility Programme is a pivotal aspect of this vision, involving the conversion of mass transit buses from petroleum fuel to gas and transforming motorcycles (Okada) into electric vehicles. The governor expressed pride in Ogun State’s energy transition plan, which will be launched towards the end of this month or in the first week of August.
Under the plan, state buses and mass transit vehicles will operate on compressed natural gas (CNG), while motorcycles and tricycles will be powered by electricity. This initiative aims to alleviate the challenges faced by the masses while promoting clean energy and addressing climate change concerns. Governor Abiodun further highlighted the state’s intention to generate its own electricity following the signing of the 2023 Electricity Bill into law, which grants states, companies, and individuals the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute power.
By taking advantage of the constitutional amendment that decentralizes power generation, Ogun State plans to establish its own generation and distribution companies. This move will enhance power supply to major towns and cities, allowing the grid to focus on providing sufficient electricity to smaller communities. Governor Abiodun’s administration is committed to a comprehensive energy transition plan that aligns with the state’s industrialization goals, climate change mitigation efforts, and energy security objectives.
