Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will convene their first meeting in the current political dispensation to deliberate on the state of their party and the unfolding events in the country. The meeting will be chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, with Governor Seminalayi Fubara of Rivers State serving as the vice chairman of the forum.
The director general of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Hon CID Maduabum, provided insight into the meeting’s agenda, stating that the governors will discuss the current state of the nation, including recent political, social, and economic developments. Additionally, they will address the state of the forum itself, the party, and the role of PDP governors in stabilizing both the party and the nation. The new leadership of the forum is also expected to unveil their unity and progressive agenda during the meeting.
It is important to note that the PDP experienced internal divisions between factions loyal to the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, in the last election. Despite the reconciliation efforts initiated by the party leadership, differences among party leaders have yet to be fully resolved.
These internal divisions were evident during the recent election of National Assembly presiding officers and the emergence of principal officers. Furthermore, while the party continues to challenge the outcome of the presidential election, some key members, particularly former governors, have openly associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports suggest that some of these party members may be nominated as federal ministers.
The inaugural meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum serves as a significant platform for PDP governors to address these internal challenges, foster unity within the party, and strategize on their role in the progress and stability of the party and the nation as a whole.
