President Bola Tinubu has expressed the federal government’s readiness to collaborate with global tech giant, Google Incorporated, to generate one million digital jobs in Nigeria. The assurance was given during the visit of Google Global Vice President, Mr. Richard Gingras, at the State House yesterday.
In his statement, presidential spokesman Dele Alake conveyed President Tinubu’s acknowledgment of Nigeria’s pool of creative and talented young individuals, eager to learn and excel, particularly in the era of Artificial Intelligence. The president highlighted that Google possesses the necessary capabilities and tools to empower the youth in their digital endeavors.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude for Google’s willingness to partner with Nigeria and support efforts to promote the digital economy, pledging full backing to ensure a beneficial corporate responsibility. He also noted the ongoing economic reforms in the country.
Regarding Google’s commitment to promoting free speech, freedom of the press, and democracy through its platforms, President Tinubu declared the government’s stance in upholding these fundamental principles. He emphasized the importance of defending free press and free speech in the interest of a free society.
In response, Mr. Richard Gingras, the Google Vice President, informed President Tinubu that he was in Nigeria for the West Africa Journalism Innovation Conference. He acknowledged being inspired by the creativity and talent of Nigerian youth embracing technology and digital tools to enhance access to information and promote democracy.
Mr. Gingras assured the President of Google’s deep interest in Nigeria and its readiness to support the federal government. He highlighted Google’s capabilities in Artificial Intelligence and other digital innovations, empowering young people to become digital entrepreneurs. He also mentioned Google’s subsea cable, Equiano, named after a Nigerian slave abolitionist, which significantly impacts future internet connectivity demands.
Furthermore, Mr. Gingras pledged Google’s assistance in securing Nigeria against disinformation and fake news, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to continuing its partnership with the Nigerian government.
