Rural Electrification Agency Promotes Solar Energy Adoption
Engr Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has urged the adoption of solar energy as the most viable solution to mitigate the impacts of the recent removal of petrol subsidies. During an inspection and impact assessment of REA’s mass electrification projects in southwestern states, Ahmad emphasized the emergence of solar energy as a sustainable and empowering solution for Nigeria, addressing the challenges resulting from the removal of fuel subsidies.
Harnessing Solar Energy for Sustainable Power Supply
The REA aims to alleviate the burden of escalating fuel costs and ensure uninterrupted power supply to communities nationwide by leveraging the abundant solar resources available in Nigeria. Ahmad highlighted that embracing solar energy adoption will not only address the fuel subsidy removal but also accelerate industrial activities, foster agricultural growth, and strengthen small and medium enterprises.
Assessing the Impact of REA’s Projects
Accompanied by his executive management team, the MD visited various projects to inspect their progress and evaluate their impact on beneficiaries. This commitment ensures that REA’s projects are implemented according to approved technical standards and positively influence the lives of the communities they serve.
Engaging with Beneficiaries and Ensuring Standards Compliance
During the visit, the MD engaged with beneficiaries in Osogbo, Ijebu Ode, and Makoko, gathering their feedback on the projects. The team assessed the progress and adherence to REA’s standards, ensuring that the solar systems deployed in Makoko were provided free of charge to residents, with payment only requested from beneficiaries in industrial and business areas. Schools, religious establishments, and small and medium enterprises in Makoko have already benefited from the agency’s solar power initiative.
Solar Power Naija (SPN) Program as a Mitigation Strategy
Ahmad emphasized the significance of the Solar Power Naija (SPN) program in mitigating the effects of fuel subsidy removal. By embracing renewable energy sources, the program reduces dependency on fossil fuels, leading to cost savings and environmental advantages. This transition positions Nigeria as an active participant in the global clean energy transition, opening opportunities for investment and collaboration in the renewable energy sector.
Positive Impact in Makoko Community
In the community of Makoko, the SPN program has successfully deployed large-capacity solar home systems (SHS) to energize schools and clinics, along with smaller-capacity SHS for residential use. These installations have brought about significant positive impacts on the local economy, improving educational facilities, healthcare services, and household productivity.
Continuing Efforts to Benefit Communities Nationwide
The MD expressed a commitment to deploy decentralised solar home systems, particularly 150-watt systems, in critical areas such as schools and hospitals. This ongoing initiative aims to benefit communities throughout Nigeria by providing reliable and sustainable solar power solutions.
