Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, introduced a free intra-state transportation service on Tuesday, aimed at easing the financial burden caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. The governor, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, unveiled a fleet of 17 luxury buses in Port Harcourt, fulfilling a promise made to organized labor weeks ago. These buses will operate on designated routes within the state capital and beyond, providing complimentary transport to commuters.
Governor Fubara expressed his administration’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the people due to the subsidy removal. He stated, “This scheme launched today is a deliberate intervention by the Rivers State government to alleviate the economic hardships. We urge the operators of these buses to demonstrate commitment, dedication, and diligence in their operation and maintenance. Similarly, we call upon the public, as beneficiaries of this scheme, to conduct themselves with decorum to maximize the benefits offered.”
“We owe you, the people of Rivers, what you are witnessing today because you elected us and entrusted us with the responsibility of leading your government. This is a gift from the elected government, and more gifts will follow,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of organized labor, Comrade Emecheta Chuku expressed his surprise at the urgency with which the intervention was implemented. He stated, “When we met with Governor Fubara, he assured us that this would happen, but I had expected it to take at least six months to materialize. The fact that it has been accomplished in such a short time demonstrates the governor’s dedication and sensitivity to the needs of the working class. This project will have a multiplier effect, benefiting not only the people who use the free buses but also the drivers, conductors, and maintenance crew who will be employed. We remain grateful to the governor.”
