The federal government has taken legal action against suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by filing a two-count charge related to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. According to the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, Emefiele is accused of possessing a single-barrel shotgun without a license, as well as being in possession of 123 rounds of live ammunition without proper authorization. These offenses are in violation of the Firearms Act and carry penalties under the law.
The case has been presented before the Federal High Court in Lagos, although it has not yet been assigned to a judge. Emefiele has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 10 for “investigative reasons,” as stated by the agency’s spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunanya. Previously, the DSS had announced that Emefiele would be charged following a ruling from an Abuja High Court, although specific details were not initially disclosed.
