The Kainji Air Base in Nigeria has received a major upgrade, thanks to a partnership between the United States and Nigeria. A $38 million improvement program was completed, which included the construction of support facilities for the A-29 Super Tucano wing, aircraft hangars and aprons, munitions storage, and training facilities.
The upgrades are part of a larger $500 million foreign military sale by the US to Nigeria, which also included the delivery of 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, precision munitions, and world-class training. These improvements are expected to play a significant role in Nigerian Air Force operations, particularly in the fight against violent extremist organizations like Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa.
US Chargé d’Affaires for Nigeria, David Greene, expressed his appreciation for the partnership and commitment between the US and Nigeria. He also highlighted Nigeria’s leadership in being willing, able, and ready to contribute to security and stability both at home and in the region.
The construction of these support facilities is a major milestone, as it provides essential infrastructure to ensure the successful operations and maintenance of the A-29 Super Tucano wing. The improvements were delivered in two main phases, with the first phase completed in summer 2021, allowing for the safe delivery of the first A-29 aircraft.
The US Army Corps of Engineers oversaw the construction of these projects and provided engineering expertise to bolster security capabilities, strengthen strategic relationships, and contribute to regional security. This partnership showcases what can be accomplished when nations work together to make the world a safer place.
