In a bizarre incident that left residents in the dark, mischievous vandals wreaked havoc by destroying nine transmission towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Ogun state. The result? Blackouts galore!
These miscreants targeted the transmission line between tower 56 and tower 65 along the Papalanto/Abeokuta 132KV transmission line in the Obafemi Owode area of the state. According to Ndidi Mbah, the TCN’s general manager of Public Affairs, these towers were mercilessly vandalized, leading to their ultimate collapse.
The TCN’s Lagos Region general manager, Mojeed Akintola, discovered the devastating aftermath on Monday, May 22, after a tripping incident occurred. A team was swiftly dispatched to investigate the issue and found the fallen towers.
As a consequence, Abeokuta and its surrounding areas are currently in the dark, devoid of power supply. However, the TCN is working tirelessly to establish an alternate line to provide bulk electricity and assist Ibadan DisCo in restoring power to affected customers.
Mbah expressed deep disappointment and condemnation for the activities of these vandals, highlighting the negative impact on the company’s grid expansion efforts. The resources that could have been used to enhance the grid infrastructure in Ogun state will now be diverted to replace the destroyed towers.
In light of this incident, the TCN is appealing to the host communities to collaborate with them in safeguarding the nation’s vital assets. It’s a collective responsibility to protect our common national treasures!
